Our Mission

At Ember & Root, we believe that every individual is gifted with unique strengths, interests, and potential. Our learning community is built on the idea that learning should nurture both the spark of curiosity (Ember) and the deep roots of connection and community (Root).

Our mission is to create an inclusive learning community where individuals are encouraged to embrace their unique strengths, skills, and interests and recognize and celebrate those things in others. Each session includes an invitation to explore a breadth of curated content, collaborate with mixed aged peers, and pursue personal goals in the context of community.

  • We believe all people are deserve to learn where they are valued as they are.

  • We believe diversity makes us stronger; discrimination is not tolerated.

  • We believe kids should be given space and time to grow in what is meaningful to them.

  • We believe that behavior is communication, and hold a soft structure in order to remain flexible to learner wants and needs.

Ember & Root is an enrichment space, not a school. We do not operate as a traditional educational institution and do not provide structured instruction in core academic subjects. While learners will naturally engage with skills like reading, writing, math, and critical thinking through exploration and project-based learning, these subjects are not explicitly taught as part of a formal curriculum. Families are responsible for ensuring that their child’s educational needs are met outside of our program.

Meet Jessica

Owner & Lead Facilitator

Ember & Root is the product of Jessica’s 14 years as an public elementary school teacher and school librarian raising 3 kids and now thrust into an unexpected journey of unconventional homeschooling. She fully recognizes that all children are unique and amazing in their own ways and learn uniquely as well. They deserve access to spaces and times to be free.

Jessica taught in Baton Rouge, LA for 5 years and in Fayetteville Public Schools for 9. She loves finding and curating resources, developing children’s programming, and creating community.
